Les Tilleuls : maison d’hôtes de charme à Cognac

La maison d’hôtes “Les Tilleuls” basée à Cognac – où j’ai fait escale le temps d’un week-end – est idéale pour visiter la ville et ses environs. L’hôtesse Marie-Christine Coates est intarissable sur sa région et vous guidera sur les adresses à ne pas manquer pour vous faire – entre autres – découvrir les secrets de la fabrication du Cognac.

De bonnes ondes comme qui dirait et surtout je me suis senti comme à la maison et à mon aise dans cette belle maison bourgeoise : même si l’accueil des chiens est une exception – on ne peut rien me refuser ! -

J’ai aimé la déco élégante et sobre mais chaleureuse … bref une maison que je vous recommande pour un week-end, aux premier beaux jours de printemps, afin de profiter du jardin. Je veux bien devenir gardien le temps d’une saison. Chiche ? Je vais envoyer mon CV canin à la propriétaire des lieux.

Les tilleuls luxury B&B in Poitou-Charentes

This stylish chambre d’hôte in the town of Cognac blends luxury with home comforts, a historical house with contemporary fumishings.

Owner Marie-Christine Coates was the hospitality manager for one of the town’s major cognac houses for many years and her new venture - opened in 2007 - is based on years of experience of working with discerning guests.

Viewed from the outside, her 19th century town house doesn’t merit a second glance, set back very slightly from a road full of stone houses just off the town centre, but walk through the front door Les Tilleuls – the Lime Trees – is

Jaw- droppingly elegant with high- ceilinged reception rooms flooded with natural light. Behind the house is a secluded walled garden, the perfect place for a quiet drink.

Choose from two rooms, both named after areas of the cognac vineyards. On the first floor is Petite Champagne, although there’s nothing petite about the private lounge and well stocked bookshelves, the doyble bedroom and shower room.

Furnishings are simple and colours cool with bold highlights of orange and lime.

I relaxed in Grande Champagne on the second floor, a vast loft apartment with lounge-library, dressing area, and an open plan bathroom in white and grey with bath and separate shower. This is a sumptuous experience; from the upmarket toiletries and towelling dressing gown to the little design touches, bed and linen and lighting.

Expect flat screen TV, wi-fi and DVD player in both rooms and, if you’re in the loft bedroom, access to a tiny terrace with views over the surrounding rooftops towards the river. Breakfast is served in a quiet private dining room off the kitchen and while Marie-Christine does not serve evening meals, there are plenty of town centre restaurants within walking distance.

Parking is unrestricted on the road outside and les Tilleuls makes a great base in the heart of Cognac Country and the Charente Valley, whether you are visiting for pleasure or business. 

The flight from Paris to Bordeaux (in southwest France) is only an hour and Bordeaux to Cognac is about a 1 ½-hour drive. I’m staying at what turns out to be an extraordinarily lovely guesthouse, Les Tilleuls, in a mid-1800s townhouse near both Cognac’s old town and the Charente river. The décor is very modern, chic. And there’s a pretty garden and a most welcoming hostess, Marie-Christine Coates, who is a font of local information – she worked for years for Remy Martin, so she knows her cognac too). Her two guestrooms – both spacious suites – are aptly named Petit Champagne and Grande Champagne (the top grapes used for the making of cognac).

Come to Cognac for the friendly, small city atmosphere and cobblestone streets – and the famous summer blues fest – but this is also the place to learn about cognac.

And after a quick lunch presented by Mrs. Coates it was time to start learning/drinking.
